Enjoying a break from the spring sunshine, I sat under this busy bridge and threw a pair of hydrophones into the water. This was my 2nd recording trip to the Gold Coast region for my new project. I had timed everything badly and arrived at low tide. The sounds I was hoping to record weren’t to arrive for another 12 hours or so.
The area where I was recording was filled with families. Children and adults were kayaking, fishing, carrying surfboards, lathering themselves with sunscreen … all very foreign activities to me. I looked on with suspicion. The Outside never seemed so unappealing.
Under the river’s surface, away from the terrestrial activities, marine animals were forced to adapt to our bizarre leisure habits. I thought of them as the hydrophones picked up this sound.
