I love the process of listening to the world through coil pickups. Without them our electrical appliances appear to sit silently throughout the home, lifeless. But what a difference it makes to direct a coil pickup towards these same objects. Crackles, blips, bleeps … each appliance with its own voice, its own distinct personality heard through its electrical pulse. It is one of the joys of field recording, to unveil a hidden world of sound.
My latest release Pulse (through the Hemisphärenokukyo label) features recordings from common home appliances. Over 10 tracks you will hear raw recordings interspersed with more compositional pieces that twist and distort the original recordings.

congratulations for the website and for your wonderful research:) I’m an electronic music producer and I started to exploring the field recording technical, especially in mic coils.
I listened to Pulse (very charming). I wanted to ask you a question: listening track number 6, 6.VI (but also the others), I noticed that in the track is possible hear a very pleasant LOW END. They are recorded with coil mic or you have added sa enveloped sine wave through a VCO or similar or post production? it would be interesting if you shared your recording techniques also to capture quiet sounds.

Hi and thanks for your kind words about Pulse. The tracks were all recorded with a coil mic. Track vi uses recordings of a TV remote control – just a few of its short pulses were cut and looped to provide the beats. Using an EQ I’ve brought out the tonalities/pitches of just one recording … this is one of my favourite things to do in post-pro, finding the sounds within the sound. Nothing else has been added here.
